Where are the physical tools stored? Base-10 blocks, fraction tiles, visual counters, algebra tiles, grid paper.
πΆββοΈ Step-by-Step Routine
Concrete Phase: Have the student physically construct the problem using concrete manipulatives (e.g., build 34 + 28 with base-10 blocks).
Representational Phase: Guide the student to draw a visual sketch or diagram of the physical model on grid paper.
Abstract Phase: Connect the visual drawing directly to standard mathematical symbols and numbers (e.g., 34 + 28 = 62).
π¨ Troubleshooting & Avoidance (When things go wrong)
If the student struggles with abstract symbols: Immediately return to the representational or concrete stage for 2-3 additional sample problems.
What NEVER to do: Do not rush to pencil-and-paper equations before the student demonstrates conceptual understanding with physical/visual models.
Signs of frustration: Rushing, random guessing, or pushing materials away. Transition back to hands-on manipulatives.
