Where are the physical tools stored? Whiteboard, shared scratchpad, worked-example cards, prompt level tracking sheet.
🚶♂️ Step-by-Step Routine
I Do (Explicit Model): Demonstrate the exact problem-solving procedure aloud while the student observes without pressure to write.
We Do (Guided Practice): Solve a parallel problem together. Provide verbal and gestural prompts, fading help as confidence builds.
You Do (Independent Mastery): Provide a similar problem for the student to attempt independently while standing back to observe.
🚨 Troubleshooting & Avoidance (When things go wrong)
If the student freezes during 'You Do': Step back to 'We Do' and complete the first step together, then re-prompt for step 2.
What NEVER to do: Do not hover over the desk during 'You Do'—give physical space to encourage independent execution.
Signs of frustration: Pencil hovering, verbal avoidance ('I don't get it'). Re-verify understanding with a worked example.
