These characteristics generally fall into three categories: hyper-reactivity (over-responsiveness), hypo-reactivity (under-responsiveness), and sensory seeking behaviors.

Common sensory characteristics include:

  • Auditory Sensitivity: Atypical reactions to sound are frequent, often manifesting as an aversion to specific noises or hyper-responsiveness where an individual might cover their ears even to moderate sounds. In workplace or school settings, noise from equipment or open-plan environments can be overwhelming.
  • Visual Reactivity and Fascination: This can include a fascination with lights or movement (e.g., repeatedly turning a light switch on and off) or a strong sensitivity to glare, such as from fluorescent office lighting or oncoming vehicle headlights while driving.
  • Tactile Sensitivities: Individuals may display an aversion to specific textures or, conversely, engage in tactile seeking, which involves an excessive need to touch objects or surfaces.
  • Indifference to Pain or Temperature: A common form of hypo-reactivity is an apparent indifference to physical pain or extreme heat and cold.

  • Sensory Overload from Social Interaction: Activities such as eye contact can be experienced as invasive, distracting, or physically uncomfortable, leading to sensory overload.
